Beloved Brother Chief Phil Lane and FWII International Family,
I am honored to be one with you taking shelter under the Sacred Tree. Just as the urging of Mother Nature, spring has called out to the hearts and souls of many and in the celestial skies the flower is in bloom.
On the rising sun of the spring equinox let us offer one another the warmth of…

I wanted to share with anyone who has not already had a chance to read, an unedited excerpt from the original transcript of 'Black Elk Speaks' as recorded on stenograph.
I want to begin by stating the high regard I have for the achievement of this work. It has humble beginnings. A small group of people speaking & sharing together accomplished a great thing. It goes without saying, that 'Black Elk Speaks' is an important work, worthy not only of its place in the realms of literary…

June of last year I spent a while with some Q`ero Shamans in the Sacred Valley about a 2 hour drive from Cusco. These 2 Shamans were so gentle and loving, They have inspired me to walk a better path and to learn their ways. I have read books on the Shamans of peru and have attended some workshops around my home offering some of their teachings. Nothing beats actually spending time with these real men of wisdom and love. In the little time that I spent with them, they taught me so much. I did…

Assimilation Blues
Grandmother, I am sad.
Come, sit. Together we will be sad.
Bowed heads, silently honoring the Sad.
Sometimes a song, sometimes a story,
Sometimes silence,
Breathing the Sad,
Heads bowed sitting with the Sad.
The people come,
Tonight we sing until the sun shows,
Acknowledging Sad‚
Tomorrow we laugh and eat,
Honoring the Sad;
continuing…

On May 10th, 2009 upon my return home from the International Indigenous Leadership gathering "Proteting the Sacred" I observed and photographed a Rainbow around the Sun...my heart and mind were so full of blessings and teachings from the gathering I felt this Rainbow on such a clear cloudless and warm day had significance. I did some research on the web and found that a Rainbow around the Sun on a cloudless day is very rare and not due to the usual reasons for a Sun Dog (a spot of rainbow or a…

As I write this I can hear the roosters communicating from across the village. I hear dogs cheering each other on as they welcome in the new morning and young children laughing as they walk to school. The air smells crisp with a slight sent of pine. These are all characteristics of Kin-iway, Besao. Francisco and I have been blessed with yet another great adventure here in the Cordillera Mountain Range of the Philippines.
We are currently…

A Time of Recognition…
I have been in Venezuela for almost two weeks and everywhere I look I see people that look like my Native relatives back home. I remember when I was little my father use to tell me the only different between the Indigenous people in the North vs. the Indigenous people of the South is that the people who colonized us spoke English and the people who colonized the Indigenous in the South spoke Spanish. I can’t tell you how true this statement really…

Greeting my dear friends and relatives!
I have been working with a group of young activist from all different walks of life to brainstorm different ideas on how to create a sustainable and just community. I would love to hear the thoughts from our FWII community on how you feel the Medicine Wheel can be used to create a more sustainable and balanced community.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Medicine Wheel it is one of the ancient symbols used by Indigenous…

Dearest Friends and Family,
I hope that you are in good health and are having beautiful night or morning. Franco and I have finished our first week of training with an amazing group of twelve young Indigenous youth on digital social networking. It was beyond anything either of us could ever imagine and feel truly blessed to have had such a successful weekend. It was amazing to find out that all of the students already had email addresses and also used a social network called Hi-5. In…

I was asked to write about someone I felt compassionate about. I choose my father of course. The professor thought it would be a good idea to write in first person so here it is! The professor is Takaki! He is one of the main professors in Ethnic Studies and wrote a few amazing books! Hope you enjoy!

I did it! I made it through my first week in Thailand on my own. I have traveled with my father since I was a little girl and I can remember him telling me when I was about five years old, "Ampaowin (my Dakota name), I can give you all types of material gifts but the greatest gift in life I can give you is experience." I can remember not really understanding what he said and in fact was a little disappointed that I couldn't get that Malibu barbie I so greatly admired in the toy store window but…

Hi All,
Well I just arrived in Bangkok, Thailand where I have the privilege and honor to be working with a magnificent group of individuals on human rights work. I just recently graduated from U.C. Berkeley in Ethnic Studies and Native American Studies and it feels really great to be applying what I have learned. So many people in this world are struggling tremendously economically, physically and spiritually. I am hoping by trying to reach out and connect with people, especially… Continue
