There are literally thousands of social networks and social media websites these days. Internet marketing experts say you must be an active member in multiple social networking sites to promote ideas and awareness on the Internet. However, who has time to update several social media accounts a few times a week? For most organizations this level of social media activity is overwhelming and unrealistic. The full potential of reaching out to hundreds of social media websites may seem impossible.
The concept of the “Mothership” may help unburden organizations that want to engage other social media communities across the web at the same time.
Here’s how it works: A single, primary website, is designated the Internet “home” of the organization, group or community. It is the originating source for news and information contributed by the community.
As information is being shared on the Mothership, such as blog posts and videos, updates may be broadcasted out to potentially hundreds of other social sites for others to experience. Some people may follow this information to the source: the Mothership. This is an effective way to reach out to other online communities.
Most social media websites allow updates from other social media services. For example, Facebook can be set up to be updated by Twitter. A message posted on Twitter automatically is posted on Facebook. Once the setup for several social media websites are in place, a single post on the Mothership will post to the other sites automatically.
On the Internet landscape the Mothership is the authority and source for broadcasted information. The message is clear and consistent; people may follow the information back to one source, the Mothership, and hopefully decide to participate.
I hope this diagram helps illustrate this concept.
