Religious Fanaticism Is A Clear Sign Of Spiritual Bankruptcy

The resurgence of fanatical religious fervour occurring in many lands cannot be regarded as more than a dying convulsion. The very nature of the violent and disruptive conditions associated with it testifies to the spiritual bankruptcy it represents. Indeed, one of the strangest and saddest features of the current outbreak of religious fanaticism is the extent to which, in each case, it is undermining not only the spiritual values which are conducive to the unity of humankind but also those unique moral victories won by the particular religion it purports to serve.UHJ

Therefore it is our duty to put forth our greatest efforts and summon all our energies in order that the bonds of unity and accord may be established among mankind. For thousands of years we have had bloodshed and strife. It is enough; it is sufficient. Now is the time to associate together in love and harmony. For thousands of years we have tried the sword and warfare; let mankind for a time at least live in peace. Review history and consider how much savagery, how much bloodshed and battle the world has witnessed. It has been either religious warfare, political warfare or some other clash of human interests. The world of humanity has never enjoyed the blessing of Universal Peace. Year by year the implements of warfare have been increased and perfected. Consider the wars of past centuries; only ten, fifteen or twenty thousand at the most were killed but now it is possible to kill one hundred thousand in a single day. In ancient times warfare was carried on with the sword; today it is the smokeless gun. Formerly battleships were sailing vessels; today they are dreadnoughts. Consider the increase and improvement in the weapons of war. God has created us all human and all countries of the world are parts of the same globe. We are all his servants. He is kind and just to all. Why should we be unkind and unjust to each other? He provides for all. Why should we deprive one another? He protects and preserves all. Why should we kill our fellow-creatures? If this warfare and strife be for the sake of religion, it is evident that it violates the spirit and basis of all religion. All the divine Manifestations have proclaimed the oneness of God and the unity of mankind. They have taught that men should love and mutually help each other in order that they might progress. Now if this conception of religion be true, its essential principle is the oneness of humanity. The fundamental truth of the Manifestations is peace. This underlies all religion, all justice. The divine purpose is that men should live in unity, concord and agreement and should love one another. Consider the virtues of the human world and realize that the oneness of humanity is the primary foundation of them all. Read the gospel and the other holy books. You will find their fundamentals are one and the same. ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

Phil,
Yes, we are one!! When will the masses awake fully to this is an unknown Religion is just that,"religion". However, the Creator is the Creator! Spirit, God, the Creator, what ever one's own faith is, is fine. What we all is witnessing is using God as a tool of fear, to hate to kill and demonize. It's horrible and tragic. Please ask all people you know to VOTE IN THE MID TERM ELECTIONS on NOVEMBER 2, 2010! Our future depends on keeping the House & Senate working with Obama!! The "One Nation Working Together" March is taking place on October, 2nd 2010 in Washington, DC! I have organized buses leaving from Asheville, NC to go to the march. The very first traces of humans show a need for spirituality, a unique understanding of our small part in this vast universe. Yet, we are the only creatures we know of who strive for this, who can either be the lowest of creatures in our actions and thoughts or have the highest of actions and thoughts--selflessness. Religion has been the foundation of this aspiration and the promoter of it. Every peoples have their "religion", their set of beliefs and ceremonies that have guided their ways and called them to a higher existence. The lower nature and ignorance have caused some to use the good to do bad. And some of it is just the evolving awareness of humankind--people believing they are doing right in their ignorance. We live in an age when these things have come to light. A new race of humans is evolving. Religion is no different from all of creation. Religion evolves and changes, because our understanding of spiritual truths evolves and changes as we grow.

The arts and sciences are the fruit of the Spirit when done in service to humankind and praise of the Creator. To me, religion is essential to a divine civilization, but religion shorn of superstition and antiquated dogma, religion that recognizes the oneness of God and humanity, religion that sees no one as outside the circle.

All I can say is our people on Turtle Island didn't need Jesus Christ to save us from ourselves and if he had come we wouldn't have hung him on a cross and killed him.

I think that fundamentalist religion of any brand is one of the most dangerous forces in the world. Research as shown that people attracted to this type of religion share common psychological profiles with alcholics, drug addicts, psychopathic felons, juvenille delinquents, hospitalized psychiatric patients and more. Unfortunately, it is the one such group in society that we do not label as a problem for society nor encourage treatment for.
