I am getting ready to spend a full day with 146 participants in my Medicine Wheel Workshop. It will be a day of drumming, sharing, vocals and building a huge indoor medicine wheel using the participants as the various 'stones' that represent both character and environmental teachings. It is a magical day that is uplifting for tired spirits in a world that has little tolerance for human challenges. My workshops carry, in Obama's words in his inaurgural speech, "the audacity of hope." I love that phrase, it speaks to me at all levels of what I do. Even in the darkest of times, there is that light of hope that streaks through me and keeps me going. To WISH doesn't cut it, because wishing is self-indulgent. To Hope, however, rests on the breath. Say the word aloud H-ope. Hope is spirit and without it there is no quality life.

So, today is a beautiful sunny day here in southern Ontario. The Olympics start tonight and I will be glued to the television. Although I am not always in favour of Native people being trotted out so that Canada can show how tolerant we are of my people, at least when it is somthing this big, it raises the profile of Indigenous people everywhere and that is a good thing. Lest we forget, my Ancestors are the basis of Turtle Island (North America), and it is with honour and respect that we must as a global people accept who we are, what we do and why we do it. Our rich cultural histories bring thoughtful social intelligence to the rest of the world. I am a Medicine Wheel teacher, among other things, and these holistic teachings make us all better people.
