The Four Worlds International Institute

A child in the Migrant Workers community in Mae Sot, Thailand. We were able to send three young children from this community to school with help from FWII and a non-profit school supported by a Canadian-Burmese women. It was truly an amazing experience since in their interviews for The Mae Sot Diaries the children spoke of wishing they could attend school here in Mae Sot. Mae Sot has a population of nearly 200,000 people with an estimated 70% being Burmese refugees; many of these families live in Migrant communites which many times are illegal and of low living standards. However the families do not live here for free, they still have to pay 1500 Baht (45 USD) to the Thai land owner who also collects 1500 Baht from the other 15-20 families that live on the land. The average monthly income for these migrant families is about 2000 -2500 Baht working 7 days a week, it is scary to think that this is a much better monthly income than in Burma.
