Dear Friends,

This is a letter I wrote to NAYA after finding out that the political action committee promoting water fluoridation in Portland gave them $$20,000. Please share. I realize that this is a political issue pertinent to Portland, however, the information is vital to everyone.

The deadline to register or change your voting information for the upcoming election in Portland is April 30th. More info at
Thank you.

Dear NAYA,

It has been recently reported that the political action group promoting water fluoridation for Portland, “Healthy Kids, Healthy Portland”,  has given $20,000. to NAYA. It is very important that the truth about fluoridation be known. Their promise that fluoride is “safe and effective” has been proven to be faulty, just like most of the other government promises that have been given to Native Peoples over the past millennium. Please pass this along to your friends, coworkers and family.

In just a few short weeks Portlanders will be voting on the fluoridation issue. This is not a matter to be taken lightly.  The chemical that is added to municipal water facilities for the purpose of fluoridation is not pharmaceutical grade fluoride.  Hydrofluorosilicic Acid, a highly toxic industrial waste product that is not any less so when added to water, allows industrial polluters to dispose of their waste products, and make a profit off them, in municipal water supplies.  Fluoridation is an agenda of ndustry. Fluorosilicates from industrial waste also contain arsenic, mercury and lead. The safety claims have never been investigated by these industries who are only interested in making a profit. Fluoride chemicals have never been approved by the FDA as they are considered environmental toxins which are regulated by the EPA.

The EPA has listed fluoride as a Chemical with Substantial Evidence of Developmental Neurotoxicity:

In addition to dental fluorosis, a mottling of the teeth, fluoride accumulates in the bones causing brittleness leading to hip fractures, fused vertebrae and crippling skeletal fluorosis.

”[...] Chronic intake of excessive fluoride can lead to the severe and permanent bone and joint deformations of skeletal fluorosis. Early symptoms include sporadic pain and stiffness of joints: headache, stomach-ache and muscle weakness can also be warning signs. The next stage is osteosclerosis (hardening and calcifying of the bones), and finally the spine, major joints, muscles and nervous system are damaged.”

From Waterfront, A UNICEF publication on Water Environment, Sanitation and Hygiene: "Fluoride in Water: An Overview", see

Recent scientific studies have shown that fluoride has debilitating effects on the nervous system and childrens IQs.

Fluoride is a major contributing factor to our current epidemic of ADHD in children and adults.

This is well documented by top scientists including Dr. Phyllis Mullenix:

Mass medication without consent is a violation of civil rights. Studies show that African Americans, Native Americans, Latino populations and others are being disproportionately harmed by water fluoridation.

The ‘safe and effective’ message completely ignores racial, ethnic,...

“A blue ribbon panel of scientists has identified kidney patients and diabetics as being especially susceptible to harm from ingested fluorides. “

Since fluoride is already in foods grown with pesticides, and especially highly concentrated in soft drinks and many processed foods, it is insane to add this toxin to the water. Experts warn that we are already consuming too much fluoride.

“Today, with so many additional sources of fluoride present in processed foods, commercial beverages, and dental care products that were not there when water fluoridation began, the total intake of fluoride, even among children, has increased to as much as 2-5 milligrams or more per day, well above the initially proposed optimum of 1 mg/day (from one liter of 1-ppm fluoridated water). With these higher levels of fluoride intake, dental fluorosis and other toxic effects noted above have also increased.” (Letter from top scientists and physicians to  Dr. Bruce Alberts, President, National Academy of Sciences October 15, 1997 see list below.)

The CDC and ADA warn mothers not to make baby formula with fluoridated water.

Fluoride leaches lead from pipes
”Fluorosilicic acid leaches lead from pipes, and there is a lot of lead in Portland plumbing. Even new brass pipes and faucets can contain up to 8% lead. Old buildings can contain pipes which are up to 30 percent lead. In 2004 Seattle papers  reported lead at up to 1,600 ppb  in drinking water in Seattle schools, far above the 15 ppm EPA action level and the 0 ppm goal. When fluoridation stops lead levels in water and blood drop, as happened in Tacoma in 1992.”

The way to reduce exposure to lead is to keep fluoridation chemicals out of the water.

It is no surprise that the sugar industry is interested in fluoridation so as to divert the issue away from the obvious, sugar causes cavities. Instead of sugar being removed from products it is being added to more and more processed foods and fluoridation promoted. Ignored is the fact that the amount of cavities in fluoridated areas is the same or worse as in non-fluoridated areas.

“In Harlem, NY, which has been fluoridated for 32 years, "There's more dental decay among these kids; we see the beginning of inflamed gingivitis in their mouths." -American Dental Association, May 2000

99% of the fluoride in water goes down the drain and into our rivers where it is adversely affecting the salmon.

"Between 1982 and 1986, Douglas Dey and a fellow NMFS biologist conducted a groundbreaking study of fluoride's environmental effects at the John Day Dam on the Columbia River. His study won an award from the American Fisheries Society, an association of fisheries biologists.

Dey set out to solve a mystery. Why were so many salmon dying at the dam?

He discovered that low levels of fluoride emitted by an aluminum smelter upstream were making the salmon too stoned and lethargic to climb fish ladders. It took the dazed critters about a week to traverse the dam, compared to the usual one day--and more than 50 percent of the salmon died before making the trip. (Dr. Mullenix calls this the "couch potato" effect; see links above.)

Once the smelter above the dam was forced to reduce its fluoride emissions, the salmon death rate was cut by a factor of 10. Subsequent studies confirmed fluoride's effects and found that salmon, when given a choice, avoid fluoridated waterways, says Dey. "It's a serious problem when the salmon can't even negotiate the fishway because of a very small amount of toxin," says Bill Bakke, a founder of Oregon Trout who currently heads the Native Fish Society of Oregon. Bakke, one of the few environmentalists contacted by WW who had heard of Dey's study, opposes SB99, saying that the risk posed by fluoridation "can't be tolerated if we're going to recover the fish."

“The problem is that 99 percent of the fluoride (in tap water) goes right down the drain and into our rivers, as sewage-treatment plants don't remove the chemical. Studies have shown that sewage plants in fluoridated communities can emit fluoride at about 1.2 parts per million--six times the level allowed in British Columbia.

Although the fluoride is diluted well downstream, our major rivers already have traces of fluoride from sources that include smelters and microchip factories. Engelking's testing on the Willamette River, for example, has found levels of fluoride at 0.1 and 0.2 ppm, already pushing what salmon can handle.

Engelking is especially worried that tributaries, key to salmon spawning, would hold higher concentrations of fluoride because there would be less dilution. The Tualatin River, for example, already tests as high as 0.5 ppm fluoride."  (Tualatin fluoridates its water.)

Fluoride is not an essential nutrient.

Scientific, Medical and Dental Experts warn that fluoride is detrimetal to health:

“The fact that fluoride is incorporated into the mineral matrix of bones and teeth does not make it an essential nutrient. Other elements hardly considered essential, such as lead and cadmium, also accumulate in bones and teeth, and they are not regarded as beneficial. Obviously, if fluoride is not essential in human nutrition, any consideration of it in terms of an "adequate intake" is clearly not appropriate and should not be part of a "dietary reference intakes" report.

In fact, there is no known essential biochemical role for fluoride in any animal, including humans. “

The most distinguished and long-time fluoride expert member of the Panel on Calcium and Related Nutrients - Professor Gary M. Whitford of the Medical College of Georgia. In the second, revised edition of his widely-cited monograph on The Metabolism and Toxicity of Fluoride (Karger, Basel, 1996), he states on page 138 (copy enclosed):

"Most estimates indicate that crippling skeletal fluorosis occurs when 10-20 mg of fluoride have been ingested on a daily basis for at least 10 years." With this clinical condition, he notes, ". . . bone ash fluoride concentrations generally exceed 9,000 ppm. Calcification ofligaments often precludes joint mobility and numerous exostoses may be present. These effects may be associated with muscle wasting and neurological complications due to spinal cord compression."

"Water fluoridation is the single largest case of scientific fraud, promoted by the government, supported by taxpayer dollars, aided and abetted by the ADA and the AMA, in the history of the planet."

"Sodium fluoride is a registered rat poison and roach poison. It has been a protected pollutant for a very long time." - William Hirzy, PhD President of the Union of Professional Employees of the EPA

"sodium fluoride is a very toxic chemical, acting as an enzyme poison, direct irritant and calcium inactivator ... .It reacts with growing tooth enamel and with bones to produce irreversible damage."

- Granville Knight, MD president of the American Academy of Nutrition

Congressional Record, 31 July 56

"I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable."

- Charles Gordon Heyd, MD, president, AMA

"no physician in his right mind would hand to his patient a bottled filled with a dangerous drug with instructions to take as much or as little of it as he wished ... And yet, the Public Health Service is engaged upon a widespread propaganda program to insist that communities do exactly that ... The purpose of administering fluoride is not to render the water supply pure and potable but to contaminate it with a dangerous, toxic drug for the purpose of administering mass medication to the consumer, without regard to age or physical condition."

- L. Alesen, MD, president of the California Medical Association
Robotry, p14

The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine  urges a “no” vote to mandated water fluoridation: “As health professionals, we favor effective national and community efforts for cavity prevention; for example, a campaign for children to reduce sugar intake would have demonstrable effects on cavity reduction.

A “no” vote is a vote for the health of infants and small children…for the right to make our own health decisions…and for effective cavity prevention programs.”

Many local doctors and dentists are also against fluoridation:

Finally, and this is eyebrow-raising, Fluoridation is illegal in Oregon.

Oregon law at OAR 333-061-0005 provides: “Products added to public water systems for … fluoridation … shall meet the requirements of National Sanitation Foundation Standard 60 …”. NSF Standard 60 requires that around twenty toxicological studies be done, however, NSF admits that toxicological studies have never being done. Thus, fluorosilicic acid does not “meet the requirements” of NSF 60 and therefore may not legally be used for fluoridation under Oregon law.

Tooth decay is caused by poor dental hygiene and bad eating habits, not a lack of fluoride. Money would be best spent on education and subsidies for low income families for regular dental cleanings. Care Oregon and Family Care are choosing to promote fluoridation, which has been proven to be ineffective in preventing tooth decay, especially in lower income populations, rather than pay dentists a fair price for treating their Oregon Health Plan patients. Under their system they would rather see these patients go without the care they need.  Please stop this insanity. Vote no on the water fluoridation measure 26-151 this May. Do it for yourself, your families and for the next seven generations.

Of course NO to fluoridation...but how insane is the fact that we have to vote on corporate pollutants, etc. instead

of ending any corporate interests that promote in any way these pollutants for animal and human consumption.  We are thinking at the wrong end of the situation.  End Monsanto and the corporate take over of the country.  Ban Monsanto and company from existence.  Corporations are NOT people.   Shirley Guy

The good news is that Portland voted it down by a large margin; 61% voted "no" to fluoridation. We now need to remind our state senators that we don't want this popping up again at the state level.
