Wikileaks: 70 Percent Of Peruvian Timber Felled Illegally

A US embassy cable published by Wikileaks revealed the Peruvian government had knowledge of the illegal harvest and export of up to 90 percent of its mahogany timber.

The secret cable also revealed that Peru's government is aware that the illegal timber is being 'laundered' using 'document falsification, timber extraction outside the concession boundaries and links to bribes'.

According to Survival International, this news comes just weeks international headlines revealed that that loggers in Peru infiltrated protected areas inhabited by uncontacted tribes, forcing them to flee across the border into Brazil.

In the cable, then-US ambassador to Peru James Struble's comments paint a damning picture of Peru's forestry mismanagement and embarrasses Home Depot, Lowe's and Lumber Liquidators which have all confirmed they use the timber in their products.

Peru exports the most broad leaf mahogany in the world, a majority of it to the US Much of the in the world, a majority of it to the U.S. Broad leaf mahogany [continues to be an] endangered species under Appendix II of the International endangered species under Appendix II of the International Convention against Trafficking in Endangered Species Convention Against Trafficking in Endangered Species (CITES).

According to Survival International, the unabated illegal logging poses a grave threat to uncontacted tribes who could be wiped out by diseases brought by outsiders or face inter-tribal warfare if they are pushed off their lands.

"The ambassador's cable shows the alarming extent to which the authorities were aware of illegal logging in Peru, did not admit it, and did little to stop it," said Survival's Director, Stephen Corry. "Consumers in the US and Europe simply can't rely on documents that purport to show Peruvian mahogany is sustainably sourced, as these are clearly not worth the paper they're written on."

Is there anyone on this God created planet. who is so blind that she or he can not see what the real Dragon, the llovers of GOLD. What has been done done to the Native Americans and to the Land that God blessed with such abundance, beauty and awe inspiring diversity? What has been done to the Native Hawaiian, the Native African, in fact to the entire world native people. Is the exploitation of the Native peoples of the plant part of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ? The irony of thei video by the line-up of False Prophet is that it ends with "this magnificent Planet that God has entrusted to us", meaning the very people to destroyed large areas of land through polution and fought against the activists that protested. That washed the Sierra of their rich soil but gold mining in the gold country along the San Joaquin River; come and see don't believe me. The cost of cleaning the astronomical tonage of sediment in the Sacramento River and the clogging of the San Francisco Bay is history. Read it. No regulation for industry and manufacturing; so our land, our rivers, our ocean remain unprotected because the people you hear in this hysterical, dark and cynical video work for the Gold Diggers.
I am conservative, I believe we, the comnmon people need to step up to the plate and become the true husbandman of the Lord. If you think for one moment that these are different people from the ones who enslaved the black African, marched the Native Americans from their own lands on a death march to the desolate territories that the dominant society did not value, THINK AGAIN. Does any God loving, God fearing soul think that God is blind? There is a visitation from God that is harrowing the American Nation. You are either loyal to God or loyal to the Pharisees. If you value your free will pray for guidance, detach yourselves from political rhetoric and choose what is good independent of your own preferrences. Choose for your brother what you would choose for your self. If you can not use the holy Name of Jesus with reverance don't use it at all.

Jesus Christ was the visible image of the invisible Creator. Mary was found with child from the seed implanted by the Creator because the majority of DNA passed down generationally comes from the man's side and the curse had to be broken. Jesus Christ was crucified by the same kind of system that arrived on our Turtle Island with the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria and every ship that followed. Because of the birth, life, death, burial, resurrection and ascension Jesus became the Way, Truth and the Life for all of us. We, as Native people, once believed we came from spiritual origins and we were on our way to a spiritual destination. This was our physical experience and was only a small part of our eternal existence. That is why when the Europeans came they marvelled at the pure conditions in this "new" world, but we believed to abuse any part of life and life giving things we were abusing ourselves and the generations that would follow us. It was once important to us that we leave Mother Earth as we found her so that our children and grandchildren for generations would have as quality a life as we did while we were here. Something the Europeans had lost with the loss of their tribal consciousness and connection to all life giving things.

ah .. alo?  I m for  sure  for religious freedom, but  on my opinion:  why is this lady and other speakers  in that film think they  can judge over others and disrepsect other believes and other ways of  life and spiritual freedom .. In my opinon Jesus view on love and life is quit the opposite those people promote.. Jesus is a mortal man, the Council in Rom gave him this name that he is son of God  way after he died.   Jesus was married to Maria Madgalena, he intended that she will lead his movement....  she is not a prostitute as it was spread around to hurt her reputation. If you have the time pls look the movie the DaVinci Code, then you understand more who invented Jesus as figure to control people.. Jesus would turn in his grave when he  would hear, what was done with his simple message of love, honor, respect, honesty, brohterhood of man..    I can tell you, we all are son a nd daughters of the Creator, God; Yawe, the great Spirit, or what ever you name this higher spiritual  power,   We all are one famely  no matter  what color your body has or what you  believe in..   These religions have gone far far  wayyyyyyyy far away from the truth.. and the truth will always be true...  Jesus was not and never the son of God, sent to this world to save  the people.. No f.. ing way. Jesus was just a man with high RESPECT for life, for decency, honor,  dignity..

I thank God, that these people who are called "Christian Right Leaders" are not right!  Nor are they the moral authority!  There is a documentary, "Renewal" about the many Americans who are answering a spiritual call to confront the challenges of environmental degradation. From within their Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim, Native American traditions, they are re-examining what it means to be human & how we chose to live on Mother Earth.
