With support from Google Inc. Charitable Giving Fund at Tides Foundation, the Bioneers Dreaming New Mexico Project (DNM) and New Energy Economy (NEE), are pleased to announce the release of the film entitled “Walk in Beauty: Clean Energy for a Changeable World”. This short film tells of the historic opportunity for Navajo Nation to act as a national and global leader in the transition to clean energy.
Navajo communities in northwest New Mexico have been adversely and profoundly affected by coal and uranium development. The area had hundreds of uranium mines – many of which have not been remediated - and is home to two of the largest and dirtiest coal-fired power plants in the country. At the same time, northwest New Mexico has excellent clean energy resources, which, if developed, could create thousands of jobs in an area that has an unemployment rate above 50 percent. Currently there are few job opportunities for young people on Navajo Nation, and recent graduates have left their communities in search of work.
“Walk in Beauty” will be used to inform and educate Navajo communities and Tribal Council leaders about the benefits of clean energy and green jobs.
