2012 -- Top Ten Trends Towards A Golden Age & A Wisdom Based Global Economy -- Beyond The Global Financial Crisis

London, UK - 22nd August 2012, 08:30 GMT

Dear ATCA Open & Philanthropia Friends

[Please note that the views presented by individual contributors are not necessarily representative of the views of ATCA, which is neutral. ATCA conducts collective Socratic dialogue on global opportunities and threats.]

2012 is a watershed year in the history of humankind. The cumulative effects of Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks or SADNs are not only changing the very nature of our existence but also the perception of each other via our unprecedented super-connectivity across communities and continents. Does this herald the end of the status quo? No-thing appears to remain the same as this contagion-of-transparency and flat-hierarchies spreads faster and faster: accelerating, assimilating and absorbing every aspect of our joint and inter-linked global existence.

Top Ten Trends Towards A Golden Age & A Wisdom Based Global Economy

The Irresistible Force of SADNs

From global insurrection to implications for foreign policy and from just-in-time supply-chain disruptions to the out-of-control bubbling systemic risks -- not least in the financial and geo-political strategic arena -- the cumulative effects of Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks or SADNs can no longer be ignored. If we seek to ensure our antiquated organisational structures are not overwhelmed by sudden unintended accelerations, we need to realign, reorganise and restructure our individual priorities, family life-styles, communities, businesses, NGO frameworks and operations immediately to address and to benefit from the clear metamorphosis in collective consciousness that is now visibly underway. The cumulative asymmetric risks of not doing so are likely to render our existing structures utterly obsolete in 2012 and beyond.

Key Features

The key highlights of the Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks (SADNs) follow:

1. Asymmetric power;
2. Unintended consequences;
3. No central control;
4. No intelligent blueprint or formalised design;
5. Rapid scaling;
6. Unprecedented speed;
7. Trans-national synchronicity;
8. Total transparency;
9. Creation of boundary-less tribalism; and
10. New order born out of chaos.

Beyond the top ten attributes, the automatic lack of definition and anonymity ensures the resilience of SADNs in the event of hostile force being deployed by hierarchical authorities to eradicate them.

Top Ten Trends Towards A Golden Age & A Wisdom Based Global Economy

1. In parallel with Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks, the synchronised combination of the Fuel, Food and Finance aggregate demands -- 3Fs -- is accelerating disruptive change across the rising global population at over seven billion. This disruptive change is amplified by anytime, anywhere communications and it is bringing about a transparent transformation in humanity's approach towards each other and the efficient management of key resources including human talent, skill-sets, energy, raw materials and waste management.

2. The age of ignorance is coming to an end via this newly manifest transparency as humanity realises that every action has a reaction and all production, distribution and consumption has an externalised and internalised cost associated with it. Not all costs can be represented in profit and loss terms immediately but become evident in quality-of-life and financial debt servicing costs over decades and even centuries. While many consequences are asymmetrically reversible, some are completely irreversible. It may take a few years to cut down a forest to grow food for fuel and decades to grow the forest back. Similarly, it may take a couple of months to save a few banks from going bust in the aftermath of a global financial crisis, but it may take decades to bring momentum back to national economies now burdened by that excessive debt.

3. The 3Fs and their consequences -- socio-economic and geo-political black swans -- are the result of the mismanagement and misalignment of expectations. The present socio-economic trajectory, which is ultimately incapable of sustaining seven to eight billion people on the planet at median living standards of the West -- as Asia, Africa and Latin America aspire to live at equivalent prosperity -- is going to be drastically modified in 2012 and beyond as false expectations are confronted and replaced with entirely new and holistic ones. There is much room for humanitarianism in this coming global crisis.

4. Asymmetric threats are multiplying and so are asymmetric solutions given the ingenuity of humanity for re-invention and innovation when pushed into a corner by multiple crises. From linear processes, which are essentially about fragmented production, consumption and waste generation, we are evolving towards non-linear and circular processes that have pervasive energy efficiency and holistic recycling as well as recyclability at their design core. Expect non-linear asymmetric solutions -- highly imaginative, inventive and innovative 'killer' applications -- in the area of group thinking; incentivisation models; continuous education and training paradigms; new science and the release of hitherto suppressed technologies; radical management philosophies; focus on ultra energy efficiency; alternative sources of energy; drastic waste minimisation; total waste processing; and pervasive recycling regimes. Much of the new production and consumption methodologies are going to focus on utilising recycled and recyclable materials with extremely high energy efficiency as opposed to virgin raw materials and large quantities of energy and natural resources -- water, air and land -- generating excessive waste for generations to come. There will be increased reliance on local sourcing as the global 3Fs continue to bite ever harder in late 2012 and beyond.

5. The number of asymmetric solutions deployed collectively in dealing with the 3Fs is becoming the 'gold measure' of resilience for that individual, family, community, organisation, corporation, region and nation state. Expect taxation in avant garde governments to evolve dynamically to act as a penalty on laggards, who do not adopt the 'gold measures' swiftly.

6. The boundaries of the sovereign nation state are being superseded by trans-national Self Assembling Dynamic Networks (SADNs) -- distributed movements and ideologies -- and by the sovereign individual in many asymmetric ways as they exploit arbitrage opportunities. The boundary-less environment is creating a globally inter-dependent matrix, as if in quantum entanglement. The 3Fs are propelling humanity towards longevity and sustainability based on holistic thinking and collective good. This disruptive change will have extremely beneficial long term consequences for humanity and despite the short term pain, it may usher in a Golden Age of individual and global transformation and Unity Consciousness. We are moving away from the paradigm of the "Clash of Civilisations" towards a "Semblance of Harmony" amongst a "Family of Nations" as the political era in which violence has flowed from ideological conflict now begins to draw towards a step-by-step close. This Golden Age is likely to be characterised by a Wisdom based Global Economy within which it becomes difficult for large financial institutions and multi-nationals to continue to manipulate the political system to their advantage via multi-million dollar lobby groups that are increasingly exposed in the now transparent arena. The arrival of this new transparency is a key attribute of elevated or higher consciousness, which creates alignment with the ultimate truth.

7. The characteristics of the Golden Age are accelerated enlightenment, renaissance and reinvention of the individual's thinking, societal group think and the redesign of linear industrial age systems, hierarchies and support mechanisms towards automatically slip-streaming Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks (SADNs) that are seamless, streamlined, non-linear and circular and can come together in a leader-less fashion via individuals, communities, organisations, corporations or indeed government agencies. In the recent past, the Western world -- Europe and North America -- had a huge lead and capacity to reinvent. Faced with the 3Fs, which are affecting poorer nations the most, Asia, Latin America and Africa are also becoming sources of asymmetric solutions in the 21st century. Given their large-scale demographics, China and India are likely to emerge as natural leaders in finding global asymmetric solutions for the 3Fs. Japan's fantastic lead in energy efficiency is worthy of being copied, matched and eventually surpassed across many parts of the world, thereby lowering global energy demand substantially.

8. The traditional and knee jerk responses from established governance organisations and regulatory institutions are not necessarily working and may indeed exacerbate the effects of the 3Fs. The modern solidarity society, ie, the nation state dependent society, which evolved in Europe and North America especially after the second world war is now being severely tested by the challenges of the post financial crisis world. On the present trajectory, the support mechanisms are capable of bankrupting many Western nation states which have hitherto been amongst the top economic powers. In the last two decades or so, many arcane nation state systems have survived on the back of Chinese and Indian export of deflation and a relatively low cost of energy. As the 3Fs remove those crutches, there will have to be socially and politically acceptable reformation. The model which will evolve will have non-linear asymmetric characteristics and point towards sustainability as measured against the 3Fs.

9. The step-by-step "Golden Age" revolution has just begun and it has a long way to go as humanity realises its full potential by integrating the physical, intellectual and spiritual dimensions to build a non-linear and circular economic model that produces near zero waste and consumes responsibly whilst being conscious of the consequences to the global environment and upon itself. The concept that the environment, ie, the habitat and humanity are not separate from each other and are essentially one is going to gain ground as we seek to find asymmetric solutions for the 3Fs. What we do to others we do unto ourselves. With the elimination of duality, and confrontation of one-ness, how easy can it be to wage war with mutually assured destruction in this new world of "Unity Consciousness"? There is also the wisdom of another great spiritual poet -- Saadi -- to be considered:

"The human family is one body with many parts; creations arising from one unseen essence; any harm to any part summons an awakening a dis-ease and a healing response from all parts; those who fail to feel the pain of others cannot be called truly human!"

10. The Golden Age's triumph will be the delivery of individual, societal and world harmony albeit with massive obstacles and hurdles along the way, initiated as an extreme metamorphosis by the 3Fs and their convergence beginning in the latter part of 2012 and going beyond in the decades to come.

2012 is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the beginning of a brand new beginning! Welcome to the start of this transparent Golden Age!

Calling the Circle

Just want to mention a delicate little energy that is starting to glimmer in my world.  As maybe some here know, there is a 1994 book by author Christina Baldwin, from PeerSpirit -- http://www.peerspirit.com/ -- with the title "Calling the Circle: The First and Future Culture".  I like this book and find it powerful and reliable -- and feel that it is consistent with the "Sacred Tree" vision of circle presented here on fwii.net.  And maybe -- just maybe -- this underlying theme -- of "calling a circle" -- is beginning to emerge, across a few different contexts on the internet and in our expanded social environment.

What I am sensing is -- there is a kind of "overlapping vision" that is arising across the world, appearing in related but not identical ways in many places.  This energy and vision feels important to me -- important and valid and vitalizing -- and maybe carrying the essential motivation and core energy that it might take to unleash a social movement with real transformative power.

As many activist organizers know, there are some tricks in developing collaboration or teamwork across multiple independent organizations or platforms.  Many visionaries have explored the idea of broad collaboration among different groups -- but this vision often fails in development because most existing groups do not want to operate "under the umbrella" of some other convening organization.  They want to develop their own vision, unfolding under their own power, remaining consistent with their own constituency.

So, the idea that is starting to arise within me -- a tiny but green shoot -- is that maybe this theme of "calling the circle" could be a key to interconnecting many powerful and visionary groups that are bringing "a piece of the puzzle", and who could get comfortable with and excited about a process that honors their independence, yet supports an inspiring form of interdependence.

Maybe a circle could emerge capable of connecting the kind of broad and deep indigenous wisdom presented here on FWII with other broadly inclusive “interfaith” activities, and other visionary social action groups doing what they can to support a new politics of community and inclusion and “people power”.  To me, this idea feels beautiful and workable – and, based on what I seem to see growing around me – might emerge as a significant and inspiring convening force that transcends the perspective of any one of us, yet truly convenes the most authentic wisdom and guiding spirituality known to humanity.

Just to comment on Rebecca's concern -- I too am a bit confused about the meaning of some of Matai's points, and spent a little time researching the concept of "asymmetric power".  I did find some scholarly internet references that suggest that "asymmetric power tends to increase the likelihood of cooperation among international agents" -- but the entire idea of "asymmetric power" is too abstract and vague for me to know exactly what Matai is talking about, and it is commonly defined just as Rebecca suggests

So, though I am excited by some of Matai's ideas and think they are important -- for me, his list of bullet-points describing "SADNs" is too vague and generalized for me to really understand what he is talking about.  No "centralized control"?  One critically important property of a circle -- the organizing principle of FWII -- is that it DOES have a center.  Are "unintended consequences" supposed to be good?  Sometimes they are, sometimes they are not -- and they can be dangerously unpredictable.  What is "boundary-less tribalism?"  The concept seems self-contradictory.  A tribe is a tribe because it does have a boundary. (?) No "intelligent blueprint"?  That, too, goes against my instincts; for me, there is a kind of inherent "intelligent divine blueprint" -- aligned like "The Sacred Tree" that Phil Lane describes in his book by that name.  The "trunk" of the sacred tree is like the "center" -- the "branches" reach out to all things connected to one another through that center.

Trying to get a better grip on these concepts, I searched for "Self-Assembling Dynamic Networks", and I could not find any references besides Matai, and found his same article republished in several places, never with any illuminating detail.  Maybe those details are reserved for paying customers within the privacy of his ATCA?

For me, the power of the circle, as outlined on FWII site, is the key to the organizing power of the new world.  I personally doubt that this power will emerge without inspired leadership, held in integrity through a community circle process with a center, aligned like a tree with a trunk (the trunk acts like the center) -- in a spirit that is consistent with the vision of MIT Prof. William Isaacs in his book "Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together", where he says "Dialogue is a conversation with a center, not sides".

I like the vision offered by Jon Ramer and Phil Lane in 2009:

Deep Social Networks and the Digital Fourth Way

"Starting from within, working in a circle, in a

sacred manner, we develop and heal ourselves, our

relationships, and the world."

I am not sure I understand the full measure of your interpretation based on your response to my e-mail.

Thank you Rebecca for sharing your perspective! I will pass on your concerns to DK Matai. As for myself, my interpretation of the term "asymmetric" in the context of DK Matai overall analysis.

Warm Love and Greetings,

Brother Phil

The word "asymmetric", used repeatedly in this paper, concerns me.  This concern is based on the definition given by Wikipedia as it relates to social interactions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symmetry

I quote:  "People observe the symmetrical nature, often including asymmetrical balance, of social interactions in a variety of contexts. These include assessments of reciprocity, empathy, apology, dialog, respect, justice, and revenge. Symmetrical interactions send the message "we are all the same" while asymmetrical interactions send the message "I am special; better than you." Peer relationships are based on symmetry, power relationships are based on asymmetry.[13]"

Based on this definition, I see symmetry totally incompatible with asymmetry.  There can be no harmonious "balance" or equity between the two. Supporting, implementing "symmetry" with  "asymmetry" in a relationship says  "We are the same but I am better than you, so I will lead and you will follow or else I, being the better of the two, will rule and forcibly enact consequences and call it "law". It is all for the good for we must maintain the "better" choice."  I see using symmetry and assemmetry in any social formula equates to hierarchy and results in society experiencing  "controlled anarchy", creating Babylonian confusion by its very nature.  Multiply this base formula by the power of hierarchy found in most familial, religious, educational, corporate economies married to governments (multiplied again by the power of city, county, state, nation, region and globe, again being multiplied by hierarchical branches, departments, committees, sub-committees) and what have we got?

"Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."  "Power relationships are based on asymmetry.[13]"

By natural, symmetric law, the only governing "sovereign" executor of law is each individual.  No one above, no one below.  This provides for the true scales of justice to be weighed most equitably and in balance.  The only codified law needed, contracted and enacted by each sovereign individuals fealty, fidelity to it, is the symmetric, self-convicting law of compassion, the law of reciprocity, the royal law of liberty, the law of love, simple enough to be written on everyones heart.  Therefore, the consequence of one's actions, what we do to another, if identified as an unmediable offense by the offended, would be presented and assessed by "sovereign" peers within the offending parties community (jurisdiction). Community being defined as those who would be directly and adversely affected by the "alleged" offense.  These individuals, knowing both parties to the "alleged" offense, would most closely adjudicate the truth of the matter.  This symmetrical formula would prevent an unjust accusation from standing and mete out the most just resolution to an offense, for those judging the matter may find themselves before the very same community as "parties to an offense" in the future and in truth, under the one law of reciprocity, would receive back as just a resolution as they were giving in the current situation. This one law of "righteousness, equity", simple enough to be written on everyones heart, ruling over everyone's actions, perfectly fulfills the commandment "Love thy neighbor as thyself", using mercy and forgiveness to mend and restore one's place in community with all others.

A fascinating and timely analysis, and many thanks, Chief Phil Lane, for giving this vision wider circulation.  It is very exciting to see the "congruence" between DK Matai's sophisticated modern analysis and the unchanging ancient indigenous wisdom.  The breadth of this connection -- linking, shall we say, "right brain intuition" with "left brain analysis" -- is inspiring and powerful.  This message adds valuable reinforcement and connection for those of us doing what we can to serve the evolutionary action path.

Hello Chief Phil. I am Santiago. We met one day for some reason in Bangkok having lunch. Got a nice project but need to contact Chief Arthur Manuel as he is related from Columbia Canada. He is related to James Cameron. At least in the past he was related to him. Not sure now. You saw me and met me personally. The project is to increase conveniently resources for Avatar Foundation. Contacted Avatar Alliance MD but the replied was a little weird. She doesn´´t know me..the approached could have been a kind of cold but he replied to me right 2 hrs after I approached them last week. The project is free but based on a win-win-win strategy. Avatar, 2oth Century Fox and environment. The most convenient but not the only one. I am an indian on a white human body. but indian inside. Fly Toruk makto, fly again
