In a few words, please tell us why you would like to join our community:: I was eight years old (1953) when the Northern Natural Gas Company decided to use the two domed rock formations full of water under my father’s farm to store gas north of Redfield, Iowa. They got drill mud in our well and it was no longer safe to drink. They put the top soil on the bottom when they trenched for pipe lines and simply shoved the pile of dirt back into the hole afterwards. We could see exactly where the pipelines were because the crops were so short compared to the rest of the field. In the late 50s the gas escaped the underground storage domes and came out of the ground like three ‘Old Faithfuls’ for days. We were told that the holes that remained were bottomless. One of our neighbors’ tractor and disc had to be pulled out of a small cavern that this escaping gas had apparently left in his field. My parents took Northern Natural to court to try to make them responsible for all the damages, but lost. On January 8, 1970, my father flushed the stool, the water pump sparked in a basement filled with the natural gas that had once more escaped. Both porches were blown off, the kitchen wall was blown on to his work car filled with carpenter tools that caught on fire, his house burned to the ground and he was lucky to get out alive. My prayers are with your people, and if I can do anything to help deter the tar sands projects, please do not hesitate to let me know.
